What are Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs)?

Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) are cast-in-place concrete walls that are sandwiched between two layers of insulation material, mostly expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam insulation forms. The foam blocks are used as interlocking blocks, connected with steel reinforcing rods. They offer well-insulated, airtight, energy-efficient building enclosures.

How are ICFs energy-efficient?

In terms of energy related high-performance, ICFs are efficient in two main ways. First, they seal very well, preventing air leakage through the walls. Second, they have two continuous layers of insulation-one inside and the other outside with no thermal bridges. Most importantly, this is a great mechanism to reduce the air infiltration and thereby, heat loss.

How are ICFs installed in homes?

ICFs are premade block structures that fit together like lego pieces. As in, they have interlocking structures that lock into each other seamlessly. The outside of the form is flat sheets of foam insulation. These sheets are connected with plastic framework. During construction, the ICF blocks are fitted together, laced with rebar, and filled with concrete. This concrete holds the blocks tightly.

ConcreteNetwork.com states, “Homes built with ICF walls require about 44% less energy to heat and 32% less energy to cool than a comparable wood-frame house, based on a study of 58 single-family homes located throughout the U.S. and Canada.”

How are ICFs weather-resistant?

ICFs are highly resistant to earthquake/hurricane prone areas as they absorb shocks as well as withstand winds in excess of 250mph. As a result, they are greatly suitable for regions prone to severe weather because of their strong impact resistance.

Nexcem ICF blocks

Nexcem ICF manufacturers
Nexcem Insulated Concrete Forms-Superior Design By Nature

Nexcem standard non-thermal ICF block units have an insulation value of R-8 to R-12. Block thickness and inherent insulation properties of the Nexcem material determine the R-value. These units have a range of insulation values from R14 to R28+ (thermal mass not included). The higher R values are achieved by incorporated mineral fiber insulation inserts within the cavity of the ICF concrete unit at the time of manufacture. As a consequence, the thickness of the insert incorporated will determine the overall R value of the wall assembly.

How are Nexcem blocks different?

The choice to use mineral fiber insulation is deliberate because of its non-combustible and moisture resistant properties that complement the Nexcem material. Mineral fiber is a great alternative to Styrofoam. Nexcem is a leading non-styrofoam insulated concrete form manufacturer. The insulation inserts in Nexcem thermal blocks are positioned toward the exterior of the wall which results in additional protection and energy efficiency that is not possible with other insulated concrete forms. Since the R-values for the thermal units are based on the unit type, you can choose the optimal insulation value based on the requirements of your specific application.

Nexcem blocks’ R-value range between between R-8 and R-28. The Nexcem material has an R-value of 1.75 per inch. This means that all Wall Forms regardless of thickness have a basic R-value of R-8.2. The R-value of the 10?, 12? and 14? units can be increased by incorporating additional insulation inserts into the Wall Form at the time of manufacture.

However, Nexcem also incorporates other ICF concrete material inserts (such as poly-isocyanurate) for higher R-values upon special request. Incorporating non-standard insulation inserts could achieve an R-value up to R-40.

What does this partnership between Internorm by NeuFenster windows/doors and Nexcem ICF blocks bring to the table?

Partnership between Internorm by NeuFenster and Nexcem ICF Manufacturers
Internorm By NeuFenster Partners with Nexcem ICFs Manufacturer.

According to Imre Máté, the Director of Business Development of Internorm By NeuFenster, “it is of at most importance to build quality structures to fulfill the desires of the customers in terms of security, comfort and yet be sustainable. The partnership between Internorm by NeuFenster and Nexcem ICF is a bridge creating a system and an envelope that is symbiotic and effective in creating high-performance Passive House standard homes. In conclusion, without stronger and better insulated walls, installing high-performance windows is not effective and similarly, choosing to install ICF walls without better insulated windows is a futile investment!”

Further, this partnership stresses harnessing of the concept of ‘thermal mass’ to regulate the internal temperature of the homes. Above all, this will enhance the energy performance of our living spaces. In addition, it aims at reducing the negative impact on the environment and save energy bills in the long run.

ALUMINIUM ANODIC OXIDATION

Aluminium Anodic Oxidation is the second type of aluminium surface treatment after aluminium powder coating treatment that we dealt in detail in our previous blogpost.

The anodic oxidation – also called anodising – is an electrolytic process by which an oxide layer is created on an aluminium surface.

Why prefer Anodic Oxidation?

This oxide layer is more than hundred times thicker than the naturally formed layer. This way weather resistance and also resistance against chemical pollution is ensured. Additionally, the metallic character of profiles is being conserved over a long period.

Due to practical experiences as well as through weather experiments such as outdoor exposure in countryside, town, industrial and maritime climates, it was found that certain layer thicknesses are required to achieve a certain protective effect. In the building industry, protective layers of 20 ?m are usual for outside applications (up to 30 ?m for industrial atmosphere).

Next to thickness, proper compression is crucial for good protective effect of the oxide layer. Proper regular cleaning is required to retain the protective effect and keep it looking good.

Quality Criteria

Anodising is carried out according to quality control of EURAS/EWAA guidelines (Called QUALANOD now). QUALANOD is a quality label organisation founded in 1974. It is a standard set by several national associations encompassing architectural anodizers in the European Anodizers Association (EURAS) and in conjunction with the European Wrought Aluminium Association (EWAA). This organisation is committed to maintaining and promoting the quality of anodised aluminium and its alloys.

Evaluation of decorative looks of colour and structure is done without any aids, for outside viewing from a distance of 5 m, for inside viewing from a distance of 3 m.

 Anodized pre-treatment

Pre-treatment of anodised aluminium parts through transparent oxide layer is crucial for optical effect. Chemical pre-treatment through pickling (results in matt surface) or mechanical pre-treatment through brushing, sanding or polishing.

 Types of anodized surfaces

As a consequence to the above varying types of pre-treatment, various types of surfaces-dull, even-looking surface, gloss-surface, even light surface, smooth glossy surface or matte rough surface can be made. Two versions which imitate a metal surface look like stainless steel. As the surface treatment is based on anodising, the application is only available for aluminium elements in anodised quality.

Limitations of anodized aluminium surface treatment:

Although, this treatment has a lot of pros, there are reasons that weigh it down as listed below:

  1. With the anodised version, big colour differences can occur between aluminium profiles and aluminium sheets. Special sheet quality (Alcan red dot) is required to achieve a good match between profile material and aluminium sheet. Sheets with the conventional anodised quality are not sufficient.
  2. Quite a few of the parts of the doors and windows are not available anodized. Eg: Two-coloured portal profiles,Designer panels, glass covers (e.g. aluminium entrance door model ET-F); Ray connection (no anodised quality),
  3. With wielded (heat-treated) aluminium elements, structure difference can become a source of possible marks through heat treatment of semi-finished products. Please note this is specifically with weld connections (threaded bolt).
  4. Untreated semi-finished aluminium elements need to be stored in dry ventilated rooms as otherwise there is danger of pre-corrosion. Furthermore, always wear clean gloves during processing to prevent formation of corrosion (sweat from hands).
  5. One of the biggest disadvantages of anaodized surface treatment is that once scratched, it cannot be fixed or re-done.

But this is where Internorm’s aluminium anodized coated products have a higher edge over the other products as they are available in durax al colours. The option of having the durax al colours is advantageous in terms of getting them re-touched and re-done when scratched. So, it is highly recommended that one goes for durax al colours if you are choosing aluminium anodized oxidized surface treatment for your Internorm windows or doors. Below is a list of DuRAxal colour options that is available for Internorm products.

DuRaxAl colours

With the brief explaination on the topic above, one needs to weigh the pros and cons of using anodic oxidation versus other forms of aluminium surface coating.

Internorm uses both powder coating as well as anodic oxidation as methods of surface treatment on aluminium products.

Aluminium Powder Coating Treatment

Aluminium clad windows are increasingly becoming the smart choice for homebuilders. Environmentally friendly, durable, weather-resistant and easy to maintain, aluminuim has therefore become a popular choice. Aluminium is equipped with very good natural corrosion protection as a thin transparent oxide layer forms already on the blank metal surface. Based on qualitative considerations, the surface of aluminium profiles is treated and protected by colour coating (powder coating) or anodising oxidation. Aluminium Powder coating is hence, a standard proceedure which is explained below.

Internorm windows and doors have an extensive range of aluminium clad windows and doors which go through this standard proceedure in their making.

What are the advantages of Powder-coating?

Powder-coated aluminium facades have been used in architecture for more than 20 years. With proper care they can withstand demands of environmental and climatic influences.

With powder coating, an electrically charged paint powder is applied to aluminium profiles and afterwards burned-in (approx. 180°C). Through this, a closed polyester resin film is formed which is characterised by high resistance against environmental influences and mechanical stress.

Weather resistance is measured through laboratory tests along with short term as well as long term weather resistance tests. With long term tests, coated aluminium profiles are exposed to natural UV radiation and are checked and evaluated in regular intervals for residual gloss and colour changes.

Colour coated aluminium profiles are also checked for resistance to chemicals (e.g.: mortar, cleaners etc.) and also offer relevant protection for these. Electrostatic powder coating is therefore, environmental-friendly technology as it completely avoids any solvents. Correct cleaning should be carried out twice per year or depending on the degree of dirt, more often.

What is the Set-up of powder-coated surface?Diagram showing the composition of the layer of the powder coating of aluminium

  • Suitable pre-treatment is the most essential pre-requisite for a lasting coated metal surface. Degreasing and staining remove dirt and the natural aluminium oxide layer.
  • Above this, a thin yellow or green chromite layer is applied to provide a good adhesion and prevent infiltration on cutting edges or with paint damage.
  • The powder layer is applied on top of the chromate layer and burnt in. The thickness of the powder coating is approx. 50 – 150 ?m depending on profile geometry and colour.

What are the Quality criteria of a powder coated surface?

Powder coating is an industrial coating which is carried out according to the quality criteria of the GSB International (GSB AL 631). This provides the quality label, licensing and regulations for the coating of building components and pre-treatment of chemicals.

Evaluation of decorative appearance (colour, structure, etc.) is rather made without the use of any tools. The following viewing distances apply for quality assessment:

Outside viewing with 3 m distance and inside viewing with 2 m distance

Gloss level

The required gloss level of surface with powder coating depends on the type of colours-(Standard/Special) used on the aluminium surface. Standard colours manufactured with matte surface require about approximately 25±5% gloss level. Whereas the special colours according to the RAL chart manufactured with gloss surface require about almost 80 to 95% of gloss.

What is HM (HWF)?

HWF is highly weather-resistant and fading resistant powder coating. Here, the surface is treated with improved gloss and colour retention properties. This characteristic is available in limited pigments due to certain limitations. It has lower chalking tendency. Therefore, the high-quality coating of the HMF surfaces result in high value retention of property. In addition, HMF coated aluminium products have been tested in extreme weather conditions in South Florida.

Furthermore, this coating is certified and approved by the QUALICOAT quality label which is an international association of product quality for liquid and powder coatings on aluminuim for architectural applications.

The above explained standard and a quality proceedure is consequently, a testimony of the way powder coating is done on Internorm’s aluminium clad windows and doors.

The picture shows the i-tec core technology in the core of the wood.

I-TEC CORE TECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS I-TEC CORE TECHNOLOGY?

I-Tec Core Technology is a new and innovative technology that is exclusive to Internorm windows. This technology makes the strength of the wood unrivalled. It is consequently, used to design windows that offer more stability, resistance and individuality.

Using the new I-tec core technology, thin, bonded layers of wood are formed at the core of the window. Thus the windows with this core technology become perfect for highly robust roof beams and joists constructions.

The Inner Mechanisms :

This innovative technology of the wood is more resilient and resistant to moisture, as well as being exceptionally solid. The high-tech material is sustainable from the outset and enables larger dimensions thanks to its outstanding load-bearing capacity. Hence, setting new standards in wood construction. That is to say, the wood is stronger than even three-layered bonded spruce and withstands heavy loads where slim cross-sections are required. The multi-layered construction and impregnation make the wood protected against moisture and remains dimensionally stable.

Picture showcasing the I-tec core technology wood
Internorm’s I-Tec Core Technology Wood

Aesthetics

Despite having an aesthetically slim frame, the I-tec core performs all of the window’s static functions. The unlimited selection of wood renders this technology available in many different types of wood — whatever be the strength. This in turn, unfolds a beautiful range of solid internal timber finishes to compliment the interior design alongside an extensive range of colors and finishes for the external aluminum frame. More importantly, the narrow view of the frame brings more light indoors.

Fittings

The I-tec core windows are compatible with all standard fittings. These fittings are fixed within the core and protected against tannic acid.

Added advantages of I-Tec Core Technology:

The I-tec core window frame gives increased structural strength hence, adding better resistance to humidity, eliminating warping and distortion associated with traditional timber framed products.

Above all, it uses ecological material- sustainable wood from sustainably managed forests and has a PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of forest certification) seal of approval.

Further technical details of I-tec core window technology are below:

Thermal insulation: Uw as low as 0.64 W/(m2K)
Sound reduction: Up to 45 dB
Security: RC1N, RC2
Locking: Concealed
Construction depth: 85 mm

Internorm products HF 410 window et HS 330 lift and slide door use the thin-glued timber layers at their core. Certainly, this makes them exclusive products with i-tec core technology and thereby, become highly stable and suitable for roof beams.

Showcasing Internorm KF405 Window

INTERNORM KF 405 Window

THE INTERNORM KF 405 WINDOW -UPVC OR UPVC/ALUMINUM WINDOW

The Internorm KF 405 window can be of all UPVC in classic white or a combination of UPVC/Aluminum. It has a captivating and a consistent design and comes with a straight, square-edged, narrow window frame. This consequently reflects the minimalistic architectural design of the window. The frame is  flush-mounted both inside and outside — in weather-resistant aluminum on the outside, and low-maintenance UPVC on the inside.

The Technical details:

The window looks almost frameless and modern due to the three sided rendering of the frame . It is also characterized by i-tec glazing with all around bonding of the glass pane. This ensures excellent stability, thermal insulation and security with the locking system being concealed. The thermal insulation and the sound proofing of this window depend upon what the frame is made up of and upon the type of glazing. Inside, it has 2 gaskets in sash profile (stopper gasket and centre gasket) which help with airtightness and thermal insulation. Frame connections are created through butt welding.

The window frame covers the the opening sash from the outside. Hence, this glass sash makes it look like there is no difference in the outside view between fixed and opening parts.

Protection Systems

Of course, as the other Internorm windows, the KF 405 can also be complemented with sun and insect protection systems.

The venetian blinds give the option of optimal control and deflection of light and heat via adjustable slats. Further, the attachment roller shutter and drop-down fly screen can provide additional protection from sun or insects.

HF 410

HF 410- ALUMINIUM TIMBER WINDOW

The HF 410 is a puristic Internorm aluminium timber window that meets the highest demands for heat protection. Thin, bonded layers of wood in the core is the technology of HF 410.

This profile is especially suitable for homes located near waterfronts, areas of high humidity and damp climates. The innovative laminated veneer lumber (LVL) core is humidity-resistant and is considerably less susceptible to expansion and contraction compared to a traditional solid wood core. Due to the high rigidity of the product attained by the LVL property, the windows can be built in larger sizes.

The angular design creates a diminished appearance — With weather-resistant aluminium on the outside, and a natural timber surface on the inside.

With new Internorm technology at its core in the form of the stable I-tec Core and an extremely weatherproof aluminium shell on the exterior, it ensures a high level of resistance and strength. The sash and the frame are insulated with foam, further improving its energy efficiency and sound reduction. I-tec Glazing ensures excellent stability, thermal insulation, and security due to the all-round bonding of the glass pane.

Stable core- I-Tec Core

The new I-tec Core features laminated veneer lumber (LVL) at the core of the window frame. This technology is typically used for stable roof beams and supports due to its high load-bearing capacity and incredible strength. Wood is a material particularly susceptible to expansion and contraction as temperatures change each season. However, I-tec Core eliminates this common issue.

“Energy Genius” award for HF 410

Internorm was awarded the “Energy Genius 2016” prize for its timber/aluminium HF 410 window.

NET-ZERO HOMES

What are Net-Zero Homes?

Net-Zero Homes are alternative green building structures which are on the rise in order to tackle the climate change emergency. These homes are strategically designed to cut down the green-house gas (GHG) emissions. In fact, these emissions are the principle polluters. From leaving the lights on unaware to blasting the thermostat non-stop to using innumerable energy consuming appliances and devices, humans have done it all and caused the harm.

We’ve heard about the fact that 40% of the GHG is from the buildings. The International Energy Agency (IEA) unfolds here in detail about how these emissions are impacting the environment. It is upon us to set this straight before the apocalypse.

Net-Zero buildings are proving to be long-term sustainable solutions to tackle the pressing climate change issue.

How do NZE homes function?

The International Living Future Institute defines Net Zero Energy (NZE) as “One hundred percent of the project’s energy needs being supplied by on-site renewable energy on a net annual basis.”

NZE homes are designed to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions and reduce the use of combustion fuels. These homes use renewable and clean energy with almost a zero consumption of fossil fuels. They also use sustainable quality products that pass the Passivehaus standards.

What are the essential elements that make a Net-Zero home?

Although Net-Zero homes aren’t just regular homes with solar panels, the strategic utilization of photovoltaic solar panels is a crucial factor that make these homes.

Other elements that could add to making up a NZE home are:

  • Thick, well insulated and air tight wall structures that cut down both heating and cooling
  • LED lighting (Light Emitting Diode) which reduces about 75%-90% of energy.
  • Thick, large, triple glazed open windows that provide better natural lighting and ventilation.
Passive Solar Net Zero Home Alberta High Performance Energy Efficient Homes Triple Glass Windows and Doors
Chelsah Thomas and her husband built their dream home using passive house principles and solar energy, to live sustainably and self-sufficiently. This is Alberta’s first “damn near” Passive Solar Net Zero Home and is one of NeuFenster’s proud projects.

Are these homes very expensive?

Usually, the cost of a NZE seems to be about 25k higher than the standard homes. This would be a small amount that will be balanced out by the negligible energy bills over the next few decades. All of this, by choosing to live harmoniously with nature without adding to the massive carbon footprint.

It is good news that the NZE homes are rising even with lot of reluctance and skepticism by the builders. According to a new report by the Net-Zero Energy Coalition, in 2016, 33 percent more net-zero units were built across the U.S. and Canada than the previous year. The 8,023 new single-family and multifamily units will eliminate the equivalent of 16,406 cars and 77,929 tons of CO2 emissions each year, versus buildings that met code compliance.

In conclusion, Net-Zero homes are energy efficient, climate-friendly and carbon-free. These are perfect dwellings and provide a safe and healthy environment inside as well as outside the homes. Rising against the tide and standing tall, but compatible with nature is the most needed sustainable approach today.

PASSIVE HOUSE WINDOWS

Comment les fenêtres de la maison passive réduisent-elles vos dépenses énergétiques?

A Passive House is thoughtfully designed to reduce energy consumption by 90% in a home. It improves the air quality, insulation, durability, and overall comfort experienced in a home. The design takes into account the functional elements within a home and it’s external environment to produce a harmonious and a self-sufficient building. The Passive House standard has also been applied to windows and doors to meet the stringent construction requirements.

Passive House Construction Diagram High Insulation Windows and Doors Energy Efficient Home Alberta

Passive House Window Technology

Sun orientation, solar heat gain, airtightness, thermal bridging, heat recovery, cross ventilation and superior insulation are the fundamental principles distinguishing Passive House technology.

Isothermic European Windows and Doors Insulated Weatherproof and Most Energy Efficient Windows NeuFenster

The Passive house standard, developed in Europe, has revolutionized the construction and performance of European windows and doors. This certification requires windows to meet a ‘U value’ below 0.8 W/m²K, far outperforming the average North American triple-glazed window which can reach only 1.3 W/m²K.

U Value

The ‘U value’ is a measure of the window or door’s overall level of conductivity (frame and glazing). In other words, it is the ability to keep heat and cold out. It indicates the difference between the exterior and interior temperature of the window. If the U value is lower, the performance and insulation properties of the window is higher. For example, on a -30°C winter day, the glass temperature of a high-performance window will remain steady at 20°C, avoiding unwanted heat loss and expensive heating bills.

The use of non-conductive materials, such as UPVC and the construction of innovative chamber significantly improve the thermal efficiency of the window profile. Therefore, both warm and cool temperatures are regulated keeping the interior room temperatures stable and comfortable.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

Glazing and sun-orientation are two key factors that allow a home to reap the benefits of natural heat sources which significantly reduce both energy consumption and heat loss.

The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) indicates the amount of heat gained and transmitted through the glass when exposed to direct solar contact.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of Windows and Doors Passive House Energy Efficient Windows NeuFenster

Increasing or reducing the SHGC for rooms that lack or allow too much natural sunlight into the home can have a significant impact on energy efficiency. During winter, an increased SHGC allows more heat to be transmitted into the home. It is a cost-effective and convenient means of stabilizing indoor temperatures. The orientation of the sun is an important consideration in Passive House and Net Zero home design. This greatly affects the distribution of heat and energy consumption.

These amazing benefits of passive house windows result in negligible energy bills. They also reduce the ecological footprint of the buildings. If we want to strike a balance between urban development and climate change, this is definitely the way to go.

Différences entre PVC et UPVC

FENÊTRES PVC VS. UPVC

What is the difference between PVC and UPVC windows NeuFenster

A peek into the performance of European windows and North-American windows

Windows are indispensable components of homes and buildings. Every homeowner or a builder will invest time, energy and money in buying good quality windows and doors for their properties.

In the windows and doors market, there are two main types of windows that have been prominent. They are the North American Windows and the European windows.
Climate, energy costs and energy policies have influenced the two continents to manufacture windows and doors differently. These impact the long-term performance of the windows.

Points of comparison between the European windows and North American windows:

Efficacité énergétique

The European windows have been tested for higher standards in energy conservation and product quality. They have stood the test of time and proved to be more efficient. They are eco-friendly as they strictly adhere to the Passivhaus standards and hence, reduce the building’s ecological footprint.
The high energy costs in Europe has prompted the designers and technicians to use maximum natural resources of sun and air. European windows can be regulated to allow maximum circulation of air between the exterior and the interior of a home. The warm air is allowed to escape out and the cool air is allowed to enter in through various features.
The North American windows come with limited options for tapping the energy for self-sufficiency. The other major factor in prompting little innovation in sustainable mechanisms of the windows is cheaper energy costs.

Thermal efficiency

More number of glass panes used, better the insulating property. European windows are better resistant to condensation which reduces the energy consumption especially, in colder climates.
While most North American windows use double pane windows, European windows either have triple panes or even quadruple panes along with integrated blinds.
Although recently, the North American windows have been using triple panes, they have smaller spaces between them compared to the European ones. Hence, they are less resilient to the outer climate.

The use of non-conductive materials in the European windows – FENETRES UPVC, Low-E glass and a low U-value improve the thermal efficiency of the window panes. UPVC windows reduce the infrared and UV rays that penetrate through the glass, without minimizing the amount of light that enters the house. This keeps the heat out in summer and prevents the indoor heat from escaping during winter. This  reduces the energy loss by 30-50%. On the other hand, North American windows mostly use PVC and non-Low-E glass which are conductors of heat.

Design

The European windows and doors come in a variety of styles. They are large and fill huge open spaces. They are tilt and turn windows in minimalistic, modern or classic style.
On the other hand, the North American windows are more of a traditional design- double-hung colonial style commonly manufactured from float glass.

Cost

This is the most important factor that decisions are based upon. Although the initial purchase and installment cost of European windows seem greater, the energy savings and their average durability of 60-70 years outweighs the initial cheaper costs of the North American windows.

In conclusion, the above exemplary features of the European windows give them an edge over the North American windows. The European windows have no longer remained within the four walls of the European homes. Instead, they have been making their way into the North American walls as well as into the homes of the other parts of the world due to their high performance and sustainable approach. These are real windows of opportunities for us to make responsible and sustainable choices in protecting our planet.
