ECLAZ® Glazing by Internorm: Maximum Insulation with Natural Light

Developed by Internorm, a leading European window and door manufacturer, ECLAZ® glazing is a type of low-emissivity, or low e, glass panels designed to improve thermal insulation for windows and doors. It incorporates a special coating that reflects heat into the room, reducing heat loss through the window.

With rising energy costs and concerns about climate change, ECLAZ® glazing offers an effective solution to reduce a home’s energy consumption without sacrificing natural light. By redirecting natural heat back into a building, occupants can enjoy a more comfortable environment without artificial light that hurts the eyes or heating that dries out the air.

Discover the Advantages of ECLAZ® Glazing

If you’re considering upgrading your windows, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available. However, ECLAZ® glazing stands out as an innovative and highly effective solution that can offer home and building owners a wide range of benefits. Not only does it provide exceptional insulation, but it also allows natural light to enter through the window. This creates a brighter and more inviting space to encourage a healthier lifestyle while improving sustainability. So, here’s how ECLAZ® glazing can improve your home and your life.

Lowering heating expenses:

Choosing ECLAZ® glazing for your windows directly helps you lower your heating expenses. These windows offer top-of-the-line thermal performance, matching the insulating properties of any other triple glazing. But, ECLAZ® glazing also reflects heat back into the room helping your home retain even more heat and reduce your reliance on artificial heating systems.

To reflect heat back into the room, ECLAZ® glazing uses multiple layers of metallic oxides applied to the glass surface using a vacuum deposition process. These layers reflect long-wave infrared radiation, the type of heat energy emitted by objects at room temperature. When this radiation hits the coating, it reflects back into the room, rather than passing through the glass and being lost to the outside environment. This reflective effect helps keep a room at a more stable temperature by reducing heat loss through the windows.

Essentially, ECLAZ® glazing uses innovative techniques to reduce heat loss through windows so you can lower your heating expenses. This makes it a great investment for any homeowner looking to improve their home’s energy efficiency.

More daylight = better health & well-being:

Natural daylight brings significant benefits to human health and well-being. Exposure to natural light can regulate the body’s internal clock, leading to better sleep patterns and overall mood. Additionally, natural light is an excellent source of vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones and healthy immune function.

Apart from its physical health benefits, natural light has been shown to enhance cognitive function, productivity, and alertness while reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

With these significant health and well-being benefits, allowing natural daylight into your home needs to be a top priority. ECLAZ® glazing can help let more natural light into a room without sacrificing thermal performance. It still uses a triple-pane system so you get the same insulating properties of an insulated glass unit. But, ECLAZ® glazing uses a specialized coating to allow more natural light through the window. In fact, it allows up to 10% more daylight in a home’s interior compared to standard heat-insulating glass. This also helps you harness the power of solar heat as more sunlight can enter your home.

Switching your windows to ECLAZ® glazing glass panes by Internorm can help you improve your health and well-being without sacrificing the efficiency of your home.

More Light And Transparency:

Simply put, ECLAZ® glazing lets more light into your home while giving you a more transparent view through your windows. With a light transmission factor of 77%, windows with ECLAZ® glazing can help open up any room. This high level of transparency provides you with a clear and beautiful view of the outside world. Whether you live in a bustling city or in the midst of nature, ECLAZ® glazing can help you make the most of your surroundings by providing a brighter and more open living space.

The transparency of ECLAZ® glazing glass panes also provides a sense of openness and spaciousness to your living space. With the ability to see through the glass, your living areas feel more expansive and less confined. This can be particularly beneficial in smaller homes, where natural light and transparency can help to create the illusion of a larger space. Additionally, the high level of transparency allows you to connect with nature and the outdoors, even when you’re inside your home. This connection to the outside world can improve your mood and overall well-being.

By providing a significant amount of natural light into your living space, ECLAZ® glazing can help you to feel more energized during the day and more relaxed at night. So, let ECLAZ® glazing create a more natural and comfortable environment for you and your family.

Sustainability:

Any environmentally conscious homeowner can appreciate the sustainability benefits that ECLAZ® glazing offers.

First and foremost, the glazing provides exceptional thermal performance, improving the energy efficiency of your home’s heating system. This can lead to significant energy savings, reducing your carbon footprint and overall energy consumption.

Another way ECLAZ® glazing improves the sustainability of your home is through its durability and longevity. The triple-pane system is designed to be highly robust and long-lasting, meaning that it will require less maintenance with a longer lifespan. This directly reduces the amount of waste that your home produces.

Internorm also uses eco-friendly production processes that minimize waste and pollution when creating windows with ECLAZ® glazing. These practices make ECLAZ® glazing a more sustainable choice for your home and the environment.

Finally, ECLAZ® glazing can also help to improve the overall indoor air quality of your home. The glazing is designed to provide exceptional insulation, which reduces the need for mechanical ventilation systems that can contribute to poor indoor air quality. The natural light let in by ECLAZ® glazing glass panes can also help fight mold and mildew growth further improving the air quality of your home.

An Architect’s Guide on How to Choose Windows for New Construction

An Architect’s Guide on How to Choose Windows for New Construction

If you’re looking for an architect’s guide to windows, you’ve come to the right place! From Sash Windows, Double Hung Windows, to Hopper Windows, you will have a better understanding of the different types of windows and materials and will be able to choose the best windows for your newly constructed home!

Window Types and Technologies with its Operating Types

  1. European Tilt & Turn Window

Tilt and turn windows are unique in the sense they open on two different axis. The window can be tilted open, usually from the top, allowing for excellent ventilation and airflow, even during rainfall. The window tilts open in this manner to maximize the efficiency of air circulation, bringing cool air towards the ceiling and pushing the warm air down, creating the circular air movement desired for clean fresh air flow. The window can also be opened fully on a side axis, which is most often used for cleaning the window’s exterior or for the ability to escape a room via the window in the case of an emergency. Tilt and turn style windows account for the majority of windows purchased in many European countries, however, this technology has yet to be adopted on a wide scale in North America.

  2. Fixed or Picture Window

A Fixed Window is a non-operable unit, meaning it consists of a stationary window frame that can not be opened. A Picture Window is also a non-operable window however, in comparison, large picture windows usually have a lower profile frame, maximizing the glass surface to create clear, unobstructed views. Fixed Windows are often aligned with operable windows of the same style and size to create expansive and open views across a wide space and allow for ample natural light to enter the room. Non-operable windows can also be manufactured in larger sizes as the frame does not need to support heavy-duty hinge hardware that would permit thicker glass units to rotate and open.

  3. Sash Window

    • Single hung windowsA Single Hung Sash Window refers to a window unit in which there are two sashes, one is operable and the other is non-operable. The most common example of this type of unit is one in which the bottom half of the window can be unlatched and slid upward, in alignment with the upper non-operable sash to allow for airflow into the room.
    • Double hung windowsA Double Hung Window uses the same window design as a Single Hung Window, however, both the two sash units are operable. The most common example is a window that can be unlatched and the lower sash slid upward and the upper sash slid downward.
  4. Slider Window

    • Single Sliding WindowsSingle Slide Window units have two sash units, side-by-side, which open horizontally and consist of one operable sash and one non-operable sash.
    • Double Sliding WindowDouble Slide Window units have two sash units, side-by-side, which open horizontally and consist of two operable sashes.
  5. Casement Window

Casement Windows are attached to their frame via one or more hinges and open using a crank mechanism. They can be opened to varying angles based on how many times the crank is turned.

  6. Awning Window

Awning Windows are Casement Windows that are hinged at the top and swing open outward via the turning of a crank mechanism.

  7. Hopper Window

A Hopper Window refers to a small horizontal window, usually installed in either the basement or in a bathroom, that opens from the top. The bottom of the window swings outward while the top of the window swings inward when opened.

Window Materials and Performance

  • UPVC Frames

FENETRES UPVC is affordable, extremely durable, easy to care for, not affected by moisture, has a low conductivity, and is very flexible under high heat, permitting for unique shaping and design opportunities.

  • Aluminum Frames

Aluminum is lightweight, offers a high degree of stability, can be offered in a range of different surface treatments, and can provide narrow frames for expansive views.

  • Wood Frames

Wood frames are a frame material that offers natural beauty and a cozy feel. Wood is a less modern window material however it has low thermal conductivity and high strength. The concern with full wooden frames is longevity with the possibility of rot and deterioration over time.

  • Hybrid Frames

Hybrid frames such as UPVC – Aluminum or Wood – Aluminium are becoming more common in parts of the world as they combine the strengths of different materials to provide a combination of performance and esthetic pleasure. An example would be an Aluminum – Wood window frame with aluminum on the exterior of the home, providing excellent resistance to weather and water elements, with a beautiful wood frame on the interior that perfectly matches the flooring or furniture of the room in which it is contained. As with any of the above materials, the most important factor is the window systems design of the window unit itself. There are low-performing and high-performing windows of the 4 materials listed above for which the number of glass panes, the thickness of the glass, the composition of the frame extrusion, air seal tightness, and, other factors will ultimately determine the quality of the unit itself.

Aesthetics – Components of a Beautiful Window

  • Color / Texture

The world’s top window manufacturers are capable of creating vast scales of color options based on the material composition of the frame. For example, UPVC can be wrapped in a “foil” that can almost literally be any color or grain texture desired. There are obvious limitations and manufacturers have their standard series of options, however, the technology permits near limitless variety. Aluminum can also be powder coated via an electrostatic charge process that adheres to the surface providing a wide range of color options, based on the powder selected, and this process even improves the durability of the aluminum frame creating an external barrier between the elements and the aluminum surface.

  • Wood Grain

For wood enthusiasts, there is likely nothing more appealing than a wood frame window. Whether the frame is made of spruce, oak, ash, walnut, larch, or other varieties, you can match the color to the interior décor elements for a design that stands out. The wood can be stained to a variety of different hues to hit exactly the color note desired. For some, who appreciate the texture of wood but would prefer something other than the natural grain pattern to show through, wood frames can be painted in many colors, the most popular being white, cream, or black.

  • Opacity

Another aspect rarely considered during the window selection process is the style of glass within the unit. Glass can be manufactured in a variety of different hues, and opacities and can have varying functional performance such as anti-glare to prevent interior glare from happening, and you can even get an insulated glass unit with improved thermal insulation, shatterproof lamination, etc. Not all manufacturers offer these different features and they usually come at an added cost, however, the glass itself can be curated to fit your exact needs via certain suppliers.

Efficacité énergétique

  • Thermal Transmittance (U-value):

The U-value, also known as thermal transmittance, is the rate of transfer of heat through a structure divided by the difference in temperature across that structure, often expressed in the units of measurement W/m2K. In simplistic terms, the lower the U-value on a window unit, the better that window is at restricting heat exchange between the exterior and interior of your home, reducing the energy required to both heat and cool your residence. When comparing window options, look for the lowest U-value possible!

  • Visual Light Transmittance (VLT):

VLT is a percentage-based expression that provides a measure of how much visible light passes through the glass and into your home. Now for many, a high amount of light penetrating your home is a good thing as it brightens the space and makes it feel more open, however, that high transfer rate is usually accompanied by a high solar heat gain coefficient which can drastically reduce the energy efficiency and comfort of your home. Have you ever had to move away from a window during the summer because it was simply too hot? This was likely due to a high VLT rating. Unlike with U-values, there is not a simple “good or bad”, however, there are glass technologies such as special coatings that have less solar heat without overly restricting the amount of visible light into your home.

Conclusion: Benefits of Choosing the European Window for your Home

European Tilt & Turn Windows are not only beautiful windows, but they also offer the most advanced window technology and functionality available. If you require an operable window, it is highly likely a tilt and turns solution will provide the ventilation and emergency evacuation needs you require. Also, turn limiters can be added to these units to prevent the window from being opened past a certain radial degree, which is ideal for concerns with small children. With all of its benefits and features, European Tilt & Turn Windows are an excellent choice for your home!

Security – Four-sided interlocking operable window units are without a doubt one of the most secure additions to your home. Most residential window units have one or two latch points that secure an operable sash to the frame, whereas a four-sided interlocking unit has at least 8 latching points distributed throughout the entirety of the frame itself and are entirely self-contained and invisible when the unit is closed.

High Energy Efficiency – For the highest levels of energy efficiency for your home, you should consider triple-pane window panes with U-values below 1.0 W/m2K. The top market performers can achieve U-values in the 0.60 W/m2K range and these units are available for the supplier to the average consumer base.

Longevity – The duration of your window frames will vary on climate, weather conditions, regular maintenance, and material composition, however, you can create optimal conditions for your environment with sturdy, heavy, triple-pane windows with metal hardware such as is available on certain European triple-pane products.

Our Most Frequently Asked Questions

Properly informing and educating our clients on our products is one of our most important values. We strive to answer all your questions, as we understand that purchasing your home’s windows and doors is an important decision.

1. What are the advantages of tilt & turn windows?

VENTILATION is one of the most obvious benefits of tilt and turn windows, since the dual option allows for a more precise control of the homeowner’s environment. This feature allows one to for example, be able to open the window during a summer rain storm using the tilt feature, while preventing water from entering the building. As hot air rises, the tilt option allows for better ventilation and is efficient in getting rid of stale air. It also allows for the entire window to be completely open using the turn option and is therefore a product with a varied yet accurate control of ventilation.

EASY TO CLEAN is something we seldom hear one say when North American windows are involved. However European tilt & turn windows allow you to safely clean the exterior of your windows whilst inside your home, by placing the window in the turn position. Say goodbye to ladders and back strains, as your exhausting spring cleaning just became a regular easy maintenance.

MORE SECURITY is an automatic bonus when purchasing tilt & turn windows, as there are up to 7-point locking systems and is impossible to be forced or pulled open from the exterior. The tilt position is also a fantastic feature that aids in enabling ventilation while keeping the high security aspects of the window.

AESTHETICS is all the rage when purchasing your windows; and with reason. So why not combine high quality with style? Whether you opt for UPVC or wood-aluminum windows, your options are nearly limitless with the combinations of handles, colors, glazing, and frame choices. Our windows offer multiple sizing options, where a maximum size of 51 in. wide by 106 in. high for one operating panel can be achieved with our KF 520 model. This can be compared to the North American window average of only 31 in. wide by 72 in. high.  A beautiful home means well-planned details and choosing the perfect finish and size can really complete a look and increase the value of your home.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE ENERGY EFFICIENCY is what makes tilt & turn windows stand out massively from traditional North American windows. Our windows are Passive House certified, which means that they are able to maintain an optimal indoor climate, without increasing electric costs or causing harm to the environment. European windows have been tested for higher standards in energy conservation and long-lasting product quality. This makes for tilt & turn windows to be the most eco-friendly and economical option.

2. What are the advantages of a lift & slide door?

Lift & slide doors allows for the same advantages as tilt & turn windows.

They are also highly praised for their

LARGER GLASS PANELS AND A BETTER VIEW in which we are proud to be able to reach and offer a size of up to 17 ft. wide by 9 ft. high in two panels. This allows homeowners to create a brighter space and take full advantage of beautiful sceneries.

BETTER SOUNDPROOFING removes any limitations or annoyance associated with noisy neighbors, or even living next to a busy highway. Suddenly noise levels become extremely manageable and quality of life at home improves.

ADVANCED HARDWARE means that our very heavy and robust lift & slide doors actually require little effort to lift the sliding panels, followed by smoothly moving them open and closed.

ADDED SECURITY is attained with an extremely heavy and robust product. Just like the tilt & turn windows, multi-point locking systems that surpass industry standards make it impossible to break in.

3. How much more performant is a 48mm-56mm triple pane glass vs. a regular 26mm low-e argon glass?

The more number of glass panes used, better the insulating property. The thickness of each individual pane is an additional factor to consider. European windows in particular are better resistant to condensation which reduces the energy consumption especially in colder climates, such as those in North America.

While most North American windows use double and thinner panes, European windows have triple and thicker panes, with integrated blinds as a cherry on top.

Recently, North American windows begun introducing triple panes. However, even with this new development, the outer and inner panes have smaller space between them than European panes, and the glass itself is thinner. This means that North American triple pane windows are still not considered as resilient as European windows are to extreme climates, like the ones we have in Canada.

The chemical makeup in European windows, such as UPVC, Low-E glass and a low U-value improve the thermal efficiency of the windows, ultimately keeping the heat out in summer and prevents the indoor heat from escaping during winter. These combined with the proper number of panes as well as sufficient pane thickness, is the recipe for a perfect window. To compare, North American double pane Low-E argon glass has a U-value of 1.5 – 1.6, whereas a European triple pane window can have a U-value as low as 0.4, proving once again its above industry standards.

4. Are premium window and door systems worth the extra expense?

Although the initial purchase of European windows and doors is slightly more expensive, their overall value including their astounding average lifespan of 60-70 years and energy savings that take affect the moment they are installed, significantly outweighs the initial slightly less-expensive costs of the North American windows and doors.

There is an unfortunate current trend in the North-American market in which homeowners allow their contractor to make most of their building materials purchasing decisions. These decisions very frequently based on cost, and therefore disregard performance, quality and lifespan of the windows and doors. This can ultimately hinder the homeowner’s quality of life and energy expenses.

On average, by spending around 10-15% more on these high-performance products, you are in turn saving a lot more in the long run, allowing for this important purchase to be one of the greatest investments in one’s life.

5. How long is delivery for European windows?

Eliminate Winter Window Condensation For Good

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Unless you have to deal with condensation on your windows of course…

Le fait de ne pas pouvoir voir correctement à l'extérieur, une maison mal isolée avec un gaspillage d'énergie thermique et, pire, la possibilité de moisissures dans les cloisons sèches et les meubles, sont tous liés à la condensation.

Important Factors to Consider

In simple terms, condensation is when humidity in the air and a cold surface come into contact, turning gas into liquid, i.e. the water we can see forming on the windows.

Products currently available in the North American market suffer the most, even including Energy Star approved windows, where condensation continues to be an issue. The separation between the indoors and outdoors is greatly compromised, and the indoor panels are almost as cold as the outdoor panels, leading to severe condensation.

High performing windows like Internorm, allow the cold air to stay on the outdoor panel and the indoor panels to stay warm, therefore limiting any condensation.

An isothermal graph illustrates the effects of proper thermal insulation, and therefore high performance windows.

Oh Canada

Canada is notorious for cold winters, and with reason. So why does one of the coldest countries continue to install low quality windows, with poor capabilities of keeping us comfortable and safe in our homes during the harsh winters?

Many people think that making the air inside the home dryer can solve this problem. What they lack to acknowledge is how important more humid air is to our health, and how uncomfortable dry air can be, affecting our daily life.

According to Healthline, the following are ways in which dry air can negatively affect one’s health:

  • Asthma and bronchitis
  • Sore throat
  • Dry skin and dermatitis
  • Eye Irritation
  • Nose bleeds
  • Higher stress levels
  • Dehydration
  • Risk of infection

So, can you get the best of both worlds?

The answer is YES you can!

It is in fact possible to have both an ideal amount of humidity in the air whilst completely eliminating condensation and the risks associated with it. The solution? Install high-performance triple pane windows.

Automatically eliminating any condensation that we normally associate to this time of year, you are even able to sit right next to your window comfortably without feeling any cold coming through.

Not only are you more comfortable in a home with triple pane windows, but you are actually saving money.

Energy Efficient European Triple Glazed Windows versus North American Double Glazed Windows NeuFenster Canada

Triple pane windows allow for the warm air inside your home to stay warm with a fraction of the energy that would normally be necessary when double pane windows are installed. Proper insulation keeps heat in and allows you to take advantage of the energy already being used.

That means that the cost of maintaining your warm home is significantly reduced, and you are even contributing to a better tomorrow, since Co2 emissions are not being exhausted in order to provide your home with the energy it needs.

Our Contribution to The Environment

NeüFenster remains extremely proud to offer clients such high-quality premium products, while having a real positive impact on the environment. We believe it is our duty as human beings to make educated purchasing decisions, where we can contribute in building a better tomorrow.

With the ability to save energy, protect the environment, and use long lasting materials (thus decreasing waste in landfills), we can confidently say that the desperate need for environmental protection and sustainable development is met with all of our products.

I-tec Ventilation

I-Tec Ventilation For Your Windows

Ventilation is the provision for circulation of fresh air within any habitable architectural structure. There are two kinds of ventilation: Mechanical and Natural Ventilation. Mechanical ventilation is when there are fans and exhausts to drive in or drive out fresh/stale air respectively, for air circulation. Second is, Natural Ventilation where there is an intentional passive air flow into the building which is planned for air circulation.

Then there is mixed ventilation mode which utilizes both Natural and Mixed ventilation systems for optimal air quality. Internorm’s unique I-tec Ventilation system is one step beyond: it has a heat exchanger integrated into the window system to avail more efficient air circulation than a natural ventilation does. This is a boon for homes in extreme weather conditions-cold or hot, when the weather does not permit opening or closing of the windows for a long time.

How does I-tec Ventilation ensure Energy Efficiency?

Internorm windows’ ventilation mechanism- fitted with a heat exchanger, is completely integrated into the window frame system. This supplies the interior with fresh air on a demand basis and makes it comfortable while simultaneously keeping the heat loss to a minimum.

Unregulated quick air exchange or permanent air leakage can lead to massive thermal and energy loss. Thus the heat exchanger is a safety net with an almost 93% heat recovery. It also reduces the energy losses to a minimum.

With I-Tec ventilation feature of the Internorm windows, rooms are ventilated automatically, thermally efficiently, and according to your personal specification.

How does this system contribute to your health?

Fresh air ensures clearer minds, better sleeping, increased concentration and generally improved performance. Allergy and hay fever sufferers can breathe clearly again by choosing the option of filters in the I-tech ventilation. This prevents fine dust and flower pollen from coming into your home. Due to the regulated I-Tec ventilation your home’s air quality will significantly improve.

Does integrating this system spoil the design?

No, only a narrow ventilation grid is visible on the outside and inside of the window. The windows look classy and modern without compromising the energy efficient,high-performance.

I-tec Ventilation

The ventilator is fitted during the installation of the windows and not after they are installed. This ensures the intactness of the design.

The I-Tec ventilator is fully concealed and integrated into the window systems KF 500, KF 410 et KV 440.

Does this system have any safety and security features?

Yes, the I-Tec ventilation system has tight security benefits. Due to the window staying closed during the air exchange and therefore, the locks remain engaged to ensure maximum protection against break in. When leaving the house there is no uncertainty as to whether the windows have been left open after airing, therefore giving ultimate peace of mind that your home is properly secure.

What are the other comfort factors that come along with I-tec Vent?

Windows that boast integrated I-Tec ventilation give your home a constant supply of clean, fresh air. Alternatively, damp, used air, unpleasant smells and pollutants are sucked out of your home and exchanged for fresh air. The control component is fitted to the window to enabling easy usage and convenient operation when ventilating your home. I-Tec ventilation can be controlled via the Smart Window App on your tablet or smart phone for incredibly easy usage.

The optional installation of filters prevents any fine dust or flower pollen from penetrating. The fan can be easily operated via a discreet control element attached directly to the window.

Can you covert these windows into smart windows?

Of course, yes! Internorm is a smart window product line!

If you want your home to be a more comfortable place , then Internorm’s I-tec SmartWindow could be a perfect solution. With this intelligent building control technology you can conveniently operate your windows’s ventilation and shading via your smartphone, tablet or PC – whether you’re at home or away.

Convenience is at the heart of Internorm’s I-tec SmartWindow. The easy-to-install system can be hooked up via your router to give you instant control of a range of features – from I-tec ventilation (giving you fresh air with minimal heat loss) and integral blinds through to fan light opening. You can roll shades up or down at the swipe of a screen and adjust the internal temperature to suit your requirements. The setup can be fitted with weather, temperature and humidity sensors to provide intelligent ventilation, too.

Furthermore, the technology can be extended to other home automation elements, such as dimmer lighting – you can fully adjust the living environment according to how you want to use a given room. Every element is controllable individually, but you can also pre-program various modes to suit activities such as watching movies, party set up, etc. You can even set up holiday modes so the house looks lived in while you’re away.

Whether you’re considering on renovation or new home building project, Internorm’s I-tec ventilation is the way to go! This integrated SmartWindow technology provides you the ability to make quick, convenient adjustments to the climate and atmosphere in your living spaces and hence, is a great choice!

What are Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs)?

Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) are cast-in-place concrete walls that are sandwiched between two layers of insulation material, mostly expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam insulation forms. The foam blocks are used as interlocking blocks, connected with steel reinforcing rods. They offer well-insulated, airtight, energy-efficient building enclosures.

How are ICFs energy-efficient?

In terms of energy related high-performance, ICFs are efficient in two main ways. First, they seal very well, preventing air leakage through the walls. Second, they have two continuous layers of insulation-one inside and the other outside with no thermal bridges. Most importantly, this is a great mechanism to reduce the air infiltration and thereby, heat loss.

How are ICFs installed in homes?

ICFs are premade block structures that fit together like lego pieces. As in, they have interlocking structures that lock into each other seamlessly. The outside of the form is flat sheets of foam insulation. These sheets are connected with plastic framework. During construction, the ICF blocks are fitted together, laced with rebar, and filled with concrete. This concrete holds the blocks tightly.

ConcreteNetwork.com states, “Homes built with ICF walls require about 44% less energy to heat and 32% less energy to cool than a comparable wood-frame house, based on a study of 58 single-family homes located throughout the U.S. and Canada.”

How are ICFs weather-resistant?

ICFs are highly resistant to earthquake/hurricane prone areas as they absorb shocks as well as withstand winds in excess of 250mph. As a result, they are greatly suitable for regions prone to severe weather because of their strong impact resistance.

Nexcem ICF blocks

Nexcem ICF manufacturers
Nexcem Insulated Concrete Forms-Superior Design By Nature

Nexcem standard non-thermal ICF block units have an insulation value of R-8 to R-12. Block thickness and inherent insulation properties of the Nexcem material determine the R-value. These units have a range of insulation values from R14 to R28+ (thermal mass not included). The higher R values are achieved by incorporated mineral fiber insulation inserts within the cavity of the ICF concrete unit at the time of manufacture. As a consequence, the thickness of the insert incorporated will determine the overall R value of the wall assembly.

How are Nexcem blocks different?

The choice to use mineral fiber insulation is deliberate because of its non-combustible and moisture resistant properties that complement the Nexcem material. Mineral fiber is a great alternative to Styrofoam. Nexcem is a leading non-styrofoam insulated concrete form manufacturer. The insulation inserts in Nexcem thermal blocks are positioned toward the exterior of the wall which results in additional protection and energy efficiency that is not possible with other insulated concrete forms. Since the R-values for the thermal units are based on the unit type, you can choose the optimal insulation value based on the requirements of your specific application.

Nexcem blocks’ R-value range between between R-8 and R-28. The Nexcem material has an R-value of 1.75 per inch. This means that all Wall Forms regardless of thickness have a basic R-value of R-8.2. The R-value of the 10?, 12? and 14? units can be increased by incorporating additional insulation inserts into the Wall Form at the time of manufacture.

However, Nexcem also incorporates other ICF concrete material inserts (such as poly-isocyanurate) for higher R-values upon special request. Incorporating non-standard insulation inserts could achieve an R-value up to R-40.

What does this partnership between Internorm by NeuFenster windows/doors and Nexcem ICF blocks bring to the table?

Partnership between Internorm by NeuFenster and Nexcem ICF Manufacturers
Internorm By NeuFenster Partners with Nexcem ICFs Manufacturer.

According to Imre Máté, the Director of Business Development of Internorm By NeuFenster, “it is of at most importance to build quality structures to fulfill the desires of the customers in terms of security, comfort and yet be sustainable. The partnership between Internorm by NeuFenster and Nexcem ICF is a bridge creating a system and an envelope that is symbiotic and effective in creating high-performance Passive House standard homes. In conclusion, without stronger and better insulated walls, installing high-performance windows is not effective and similarly, choosing to install ICF walls without better insulated windows is a futile investment!”

Further, this partnership stresses harnessing of the concept of ‘thermal mass’ to regulate the internal temperature of the homes. Above all, this will enhance the energy performance of our living spaces. In addition, it aims at reducing the negative impact on the environment and save energy bills in the long run.

ALUMINIUM ANODIC OXIDATION

Aluminium Anodic Oxidation is the second type of aluminium surface treatment after aluminium powder coating treatment that we dealt in detail in our previous blogpost.

The anodic oxidation – also called anodising – is an electrolytic process by which an oxide layer is created on an aluminium surface.

Why prefer Anodic Oxidation?

This oxide layer is more than hundred times thicker than the naturally formed layer. This way weather resistance and also resistance against chemical pollution is ensured. Additionally, the metallic character of profiles is being conserved over a long period.

Due to practical experiences as well as through weather experiments such as outdoor exposure in countryside, town, industrial and maritime climates, it was found that certain layer thicknesses are required to achieve a certain protective effect. In the building industry, protective layers of 20 ?m are usual for outside applications (up to 30 ?m for industrial atmosphere).

Next to thickness, proper compression is crucial for good protective effect of the oxide layer. Proper regular cleaning is required to retain the protective effect and keep it looking good.

Quality Criteria

Anodising is carried out according to quality control of EURAS/EWAA guidelines (Called QUALANOD now). QUALANOD is a quality label organisation founded in 1974. It is a standard set by several national associations encompassing architectural anodizers in the European Anodizers Association (EURAS) and in conjunction with the European Wrought Aluminium Association (EWAA). This organisation is committed to maintaining and promoting the quality of anodised aluminium and its alloys.

Evaluation of decorative looks of colour and structure is done without any aids, for outside viewing from a distance of 5 m, for inside viewing from a distance of 3 m.

 Anodized pre-treatment

Pre-treatment of anodised aluminium parts through transparent oxide layer is crucial for optical effect. Chemical pre-treatment through pickling (results in matt surface) or mechanical pre-treatment through brushing, sanding or polishing.

 Types of anodized surfaces

As a consequence to the above varying types of pre-treatment, various types of surfaces-dull, even-looking surface, gloss-surface, even light surface, smooth glossy surface or matte rough surface can be made. Two versions which imitate a metal surface look like stainless steel. As the surface treatment is based on anodising, the application is only available for aluminium elements in anodised quality.

Limitations of anodized aluminium surface treatment:

Although, this treatment has a lot of pros, there are reasons that weigh it down as listed below:

  1. With the anodised version, big colour differences can occur between aluminium profiles and aluminium sheets. Special sheet quality (Alcan red dot) is required to achieve a good match between profile material and aluminium sheet. Sheets with the conventional anodised quality are not sufficient.
  2. Quite a few of the parts of the doors and windows are not available anodized. Eg: Two-coloured portal profiles,Designer panels, glass covers (e.g. aluminium entrance door model ET-F); Ray connection (no anodised quality),
  3. With wielded (heat-treated) aluminium elements, structure difference can become a source of possible marks through heat treatment of semi-finished products. Please note this is specifically with weld connections (threaded bolt).
  4. Untreated semi-finished aluminium elements need to be stored in dry ventilated rooms as otherwise there is danger of pre-corrosion. Furthermore, always wear clean gloves during processing to prevent formation of corrosion (sweat from hands).
  5. One of the biggest disadvantages of anaodized surface treatment is that once scratched, it cannot be fixed or re-done.

But this is where Internorm’s aluminium anodized coated products have a higher edge over the other products as they are available in durax al colours. The option of having the durax al colours is advantageous in terms of getting them re-touched and re-done when scratched. So, it is highly recommended that one goes for durax al colours if you are choosing aluminium anodized oxidized surface treatment for your Internorm windows or doors. Below is a list of DuRAxal colour options that is available for Internorm products.

DuRaxAl colours

With the brief explaination on the topic above, one needs to weigh the pros and cons of using anodic oxidation versus other forms of aluminium surface coating.

Internorm uses both powder coating as well as anodic oxidation as methods of surface treatment on aluminium products.

Aluminium Powder Coating Treatment

Aluminium clad windows are increasingly becoming the smart choice for homebuilders. Environmentally friendly, durable, weather-resistant and easy to maintain, aluminuim has therefore become a popular choice. Aluminium is equipped with very good natural corrosion protection as a thin transparent oxide layer forms already on the blank metal surface. Based on qualitative considerations, the surface of aluminium profiles is treated and protected by colour coating (powder coating) or anodising oxidation. Aluminium Powder coating is hence, a standard proceedure which is explained below.

Internorm windows and doors have an extensive range of aluminium clad windows and doors which go through this standard proceedure in their making.

What are the advantages of Powder-coating?

Powder-coated aluminium facades have been used in architecture for more than 20 years. With proper care they can withstand demands of environmental and climatic influences.

With powder coating, an electrically charged paint powder is applied to aluminium profiles and afterwards burned-in (approx. 180°C). Through this, a closed polyester resin film is formed which is characterised by high resistance against environmental influences and mechanical stress.

Weather resistance is measured through laboratory tests along with short term as well as long term weather resistance tests. With long term tests, coated aluminium profiles are exposed to natural UV radiation and are checked and evaluated in regular intervals for residual gloss and colour changes.

Colour coated aluminium profiles are also checked for resistance to chemicals (e.g.: mortar, cleaners etc.) and also offer relevant protection for these. Electrostatic powder coating is therefore, environmental-friendly technology as it completely avoids any solvents. Correct cleaning should be carried out twice per year or depending on the degree of dirt, more often.

What is the Set-up of powder-coated surface?Diagram showing the composition of the layer of the powder coating of aluminium

  • Suitable pre-treatment is the most essential pre-requisite for a lasting coated metal surface. Degreasing and staining remove dirt and the natural aluminium oxide layer.
  • Above this, a thin yellow or green chromite layer is applied to provide a good adhesion and prevent infiltration on cutting edges or with paint damage.
  • The powder layer is applied on top of the chromate layer and burnt in. The thickness of the powder coating is approx. 50 – 150 ?m depending on profile geometry and colour.

What are the Quality criteria of a powder coated surface?

Powder coating is an industrial coating which is carried out according to the quality criteria of the GSB International (GSB AL 631). This provides the quality label, licensing and regulations for the coating of building components and pre-treatment of chemicals.

Evaluation of decorative appearance (colour, structure, etc.) is rather made without the use of any tools. The following viewing distances apply for quality assessment:

Outside viewing with 3 m distance and inside viewing with 2 m distance

Gloss level

The required gloss level of surface with powder coating depends on the type of colours-(Standard/Special) used on the aluminium surface. Standard colours manufactured with matte surface require about approximately 25±5% gloss level. Whereas the special colours according to the RAL chart manufactured with gloss surface require about almost 80 to 95% of gloss.

What is HM (HWF)?

HWF is highly weather-resistant and fading resistant powder coating. Here, the surface is treated with improved gloss and colour retention properties. This characteristic is available in limited pigments due to certain limitations. It has lower chalking tendency. Therefore, the high-quality coating of the HMF surfaces result in high value retention of property. In addition, HMF coated aluminium products have been tested in extreme weather conditions in South Florida.

Furthermore, this coating is certified and approved by the QUALICOAT quality label which is an international association of product quality for liquid and powder coatings on aluminuim for architectural applications.

The above explained standard and a quality proceedure is consequently, a testimony of the way powder coating is done on Internorm’s aluminium clad windows and doors.

The picture shows the i-tec core technology in the core of the wood.

I-TEC CORE TECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS I-TEC CORE TECHNOLOGY?

I-Tec Core Technology is a new and innovative technology that is exclusive to Internorm windows. This technology makes the strength of the wood unrivalled. It is consequently, used to design windows that offer more stability, resistance and individuality.

Using the new I-tec core technology, thin, bonded layers of wood are formed at the core of the window. Thus the windows with this core technology become perfect for highly robust roof beams and joists constructions.

The Inner Mechanisms :

This innovative technology of the wood is more resilient and resistant to moisture, as well as being exceptionally solid. The high-tech material is sustainable from the outset and enables larger dimensions thanks to its outstanding load-bearing capacity. Hence, setting new standards in wood construction. That is to say, the wood is stronger than even three-layered bonded spruce and withstands heavy loads where slim cross-sections are required. The multi-layered construction and impregnation make the wood protected against moisture and remains dimensionally stable.

Aesthetics

Despite having an aesthetically slim frame, the I-tec core performs all of the window’s static functions. The unlimited selection of wood renders this technology available in many different types of wood — whatever be the strength. This in turn, unfolds a beautiful range of solid internal timber finishes to compliment the interior design alongside an extensive range of colors and finishes for the external aluminum frame. More importantly, the narrow view of the frame brings more light indoors.

Fittings

The I-tec core windows are compatible with all standard fittings. These fittings are fixed within the core and protected against tannic acid.

Added advantages of I-Tec Core Technology:

The I-tec core window frame gives increased structural strength hence, adding better resistance to humidity, eliminating warping and distortion associated with traditional timber framed products.

Above all, it uses ecological material- sustainable wood from sustainably managed forests and has a PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of forest certification) seal of approval.

Further technical details of I-tec core window technology are below:

Thermal insulation: Uw as low as 0.64 W/(m2K)
Sound reduction: Up to 45 dB
Security: RC1N, RC2
Locking: Concealed
Construction depth: 85 mm

Internorm products HF 410 window et HS 330 lift and slide door use the thin-glued timber layers at their core. Certainly, this makes them exclusive products with i-tec core technology and thereby, become highly stable and suitable for roof beams.
